OUTREACH & DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
Since it's founding the Boston Fencing Club has sought to develop the sport and provide a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for those engaging in the activity and art of fencing. Throughout its modern history, the BFC has engaged in community outreach through collaborations with public school athletics departments, Spaulding Rehab Hospital, Children's Services of Roxbury and more.
DEMONSTRATIONS & OPEN HOUSES
We engage locally in Allston-Brighton community events and adaptive sports demonstrations throughout greater Boston to share fencing and parafencing with potential athletes. We also host Olympic and Paralympic themed open house events to familiarize community members with the sport of fencing and share insights into the lives of extraordinary athletes.
Schools & Community Education
Throughout the year, we partner with public and private schools to teach fencing as an after school acitivity, PE class demonstration, or varsity sport offering. Current and recent school partners include:
-
The Fessenden School
-
Shady Hill Academy
-
Belmont Day School
-
Gardner Pilot Academy
-
and St. John's School (Boston)

Brookline Adult and Community Education
Since Spring 2024, we have brought fencing to Brookline's Adult and Community Education program to reach more local adults with the sport of fencing, an activity which provides physical and cognitive benefits across the lifespan.
DIVERSE COACHES IN TRAINING
In the Spring of 2024, we launched our first cohort of the Diverse Coaches in Training program, thanks to support from USA Fencing's Fence the GAP grant program. Aspiring coaches from diverse backgrounds had the opportunity to learn from BFC head coaches, shadow competitive classes, and volunteer at community events and demonstrations. They were also provided with supplimental online training in general athlete engagement, culture, and health. The four Coaches in Training were awarded stipends after completion of the program, and they continue to stay involved in coaching through Boston Fencing Club and local public high schools.
We look forward to offering this program annually to young, enthusiastic coaches.
SPECIAL EVENTS
We aim to open our doors to the community through unique special events that combine the spirit of fencing with other enrichment activities. During the Paris Olympic Games in 2024, we hosted a drawing instructor from our neighboring Artisan's Assylum who taught fencers and non-fencers the art of figures-in-motion drawing, followed by an Olympics watch party. If you have an idea for a similar crossover event, don't hesitate to reach out, we'd love to collaborate!
